There will come a time when you will need to replace the windows in your home. If you are moving into a fixer-upper, you may want to start with fixing up the windows so that you don’t need to worry about all the problems that come along with having broken or old windows and frames. When it comes down to it, broken and old windows have a number of problems – they are a source of energy leakage, they aren’t insulated, or they may be growing mold around the frame. Before you choose replacement windows, there are a number of factors that you want to consider. Here are five factors to consider when choosing replacement windows for your home.

1. Do you want sliding or swinging?

When choosing new windows, you will want to know whether you want to slide the windows open or swing them open. Considering both will be especially important when working with a window installer, like Lyndhurst Lumber. When it comes down to it, you’ll probably want swinging windows where it is harder to slide windows open, like behind counters or in tight spaces.

2. Do you want ventilation or a good view?

Another factor that you want to consider is whether you want a good view or if you want to be able to open the window to get a nice cross breeze. This is an important consideration, because you may simply want a view and not need to open the window. For instance, if you have a wall that is blocking a view, you may want to install a window instead. If you want some ventilation, you can always include a transom.

3. Do you have a dry climate or wet climate?

This is an important consideration, because if you have particularly wet weather where you live, you may want to go for a metal frame and not a wood frame. Wood frames can become incredibly vulnerable to wet weather. If you have a dry climate, you will probably be able to get away with a wood frame. The last thing you want is to be forced to keep re-installing your windows.

4. Do you have a budget or is money no object?

Most people have a budget when they re-install and choose windows for their home. For this reason, you probably want to purchase a window style that is on the lower end of the spectrum. Fortunately, there are a number of affordable options that don’t look cheap. If you don’t have a budget, you may want to get creative with your windows – you can widen them, you can shrink them or you can add an interesting architectural element.

5. Do you want energy efficiency?

On top of everything, you probably want energy efficient windows. When choosing windows for your home, you may want to think about double paned glass and other energy efficient options. In the end, going for energy efficient windows will save you money and time in the long run.
