Cost of Raising a Child: The Ultimate Investment | Add Comment

  • Are you serious?? 5/23/2008
I was about to blast this article as being selfish and heartless, but I suppose that anyone comparing the joys of having kids against investing that money instead would probably be doing their unborn children a favor by investing their money instead... and perhaps their parents should have made that same decision too!

It all depends on what you want to spend and your expectations. We have three children ages 7, 12 and 17. I have kept very close track of our spending for decades. It costs us about $2,000 per child per year. So for 18 years that is $36,000. Everything else is a luxury and you can choose to spend.

So do you consider preschool a luxury? What about health care? I know I spend a lot more than $2,000 per year just on that for my kids. That isn't even to mention food, clothing and other basic necessities. While I do agree that much of what they mention in the article could be considered a "luxury" I think expecting to spend that little could be unrealistic. Granted, it probably makes a big difference where you live. Raising a kid in New York City is going to be a lot more expensive than raising a kid in rural Nebraska for example.
