Finally, the much-awaited new highway – Autopista El Coral or Coral Highway got officially inaugurated on the 8thof August, 2012 by President Leonel Fernandez.  A four-lane, high speed highway connecting 43 mile road between Punta Cana and La Romana, Coral Highway cuts the travel time between these two locations to half.

Built with an investment of whooping USD $400 million, the highway bypasses Otra Banda and Higuey and provides a link between Punta Cana airport situated on the east coast of Dominican Republic to La Romana town and airport situated on country’s southern coast.

Although, the highway is fully operational between the Punta Cana and La Romana stretch, the construction on the section around La Romana, connecting Santo Domingo, is not yet finished. Once completed, the highway will provide full connectivity between Punta Cana and country’s capital Santo Domingo, cutting the overall journey time significantly.
