Spain continues to labor under a depressed property market, but sales in select areas are increasing and experts are attributing it to tourism and foreign buyers. Costa Blanca’s Public Works Department reports a 32% increase in property sales to foreign buyers and one local builder is touting a 57% increase in sales in 2012 over the previous year. One new beachside apartment complex that is attracting the attention of people shopping for vacation spots and second homes features a pool and private gardens with units starting at €249,000 each. Despite the economic downturn in Spain and a 3% fall in the overall number of real estate transactions, foreign second home buyers are still keen on buying new properties.

One leading Spanish house builder saw sales increase by 57% on the Costa Blanca in 2012 compared with the previous year, a sign that the right properties are continuing to sell well.

Now to meet demand Taylor Wimpey España has launched a new development. It believes that the region not only remains one of the most popular tourism destinations in Spain but also a second home hotspot, with the increase of sales reflecting buyer demand not just from the UK but across the globe.

According to Vicente Dómine, head of the Housing and Public Works Department of the regional government in the Costa Blanca, the purchase of homes in the region by foreign citizens accounted for 29% of the total number sold in Spain, a rise of 32% on 2011.
‘The rise in demand for second homes which we have seen on the Costa Blanca over the last 12 months is very encouraging. Enquiry rates have steadily been returning to pre-recession levels and as the market picks up we are building once again,’ said Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing director for Wimpey España.
