It can be difficult for a local to decide on a new apartment in Singapore. The sheer amount of information and discernible options are even more overwhelming for an expatriate or recent transplant to the country. However, there are certain criteria that can help even the newest resident of Singapore decide on the perfect place to live.

Choosing a Neighbourhood

Similar to most world-class cities around the world, Singapore has some incredible neighbourhoods and suburbs. Many real estate companies and leasing agents will have a large list of condos for rent in Singapore, and narrowing down the options by location is a great starting point. Three specific neighbourhoods are often recommended to Singapore’s newcomers.

The first is Orchard. Living in Orchard provides incredible access to the lively shopping district along Orchard Road. While often busy with customers from the many local department stores, boutiques, and restaurants, Orchard Road is at the same time welcoming and accessible. The street is wide and lined with trees. More importantly, most of the surrounding side-streets are significantly quieter.

A second great location is East Coast. This is the best area for Singaporeans who want to be active. East Coast Park is filled with different types of sport and other activities. There is also proximity to the sea and airport, which make this neighbourhood very popular with expats from all over the world. Finally, it is a great neighbourhood to gain some personal space in a generally crowded city.

Lastly, there is Sentosa. This neighbourhood is filled with condominiums and apartment buildings on the southern side of Singapore. This area is primarily residential and incredibly beautiful, and it is also quite upscale due to its location right on the water. Sentosa represents an up-scale, wealthier region.

Setting a Budget

Singapore has seen an explosion of upmarket condominiums and apartments in recent years. This provides many more living options for people old and new to this modern city, and these buildings can also be lavish and expensive. Plus, Singapore is very small in size in relation to the number of people that call this island “home”. This also drives up the cost of real estate. Therefore, it is important to be realistic and to set a budget, whether you are looking to rent or to buy a new apartment.

Of course, the cost of accommodation is determined mostly by the relevant whereabouts of the property. As Singapore is easily connected by public transport, such as the MRT, it is not difficult to live in one neighbourhood and visit another. In order to find the perfect apartment for you and your family, it might be worth considering a slightly less demanded, developing neighbourhood.

Find a Good Agent

House hunting can be a frustrating process without an agent. Often, the best apartments are on and off the market before anyone but an agent or real estate company catches wind of the availability. A good agent will be able to locate and show many of the fantastic apartments available in Singapore that also fit within your budget. It is important to build a relationship with an agent or another professional representative who will listen to and understand your wants and needs.
